Adhesive Specificity and the Evolution of Multicellularity

چکیده

The step from unicellular to multicellular organisms was a major milestone in evolution. This was achieved by the generation of membrane-associated cell adhesion molecules. Cell adhesion is not only an essential component but sometimes even a driving force in the creation of the structural and functional complexity observed during metazoan evolution. The way multicellular organisms are morphologically organized, be it on the gross anatomical level or the microscopic histological level, results from highly regulated processes of specific cellular behaviour. These processes define how cells adhere to the substrate and to each other and how they communicate with their neighbours andwith the (micro)environment. The focus of this chapterwill be on intercellular adhesion, butwe should keep in mind that essentially the mechanisms underlying cell–cell and cell–substrate adhesion are very similar.

Towards the Evolution of Multicellularity: A Computational Artificial Life Approach

Technology, nowadays, has given us huge computational potential, but computer sciences have major problems tapping into this pool of resources. One of the main issues is how to program and design distributed systems. Biology has solved this issue about half a billion years ago, during the Cambrian explosion: the evolution of multicellularity. The evolution of multicellularity allowed cells to d...

The Gonium pectorale genome demonstrates co-option of cell cycle regulation during the evolution of multicellularity.

The transition to multicellularity has occurred numerous times in all domains of life, yet its initial steps are poorly understood. The volvocine green algae are a tractable system for understanding the genetic basis of multicellularity including the initial formation of cooperative cell groups. Here we report the genome sequence of the undifferentiated colonial alga, Gonium pectorale, where gr...

Evolution of multicellularity coincided with increased diversification of cyanobacteria and the Great Oxidation Event.

Cyanobacteria are among the most diverse prokaryotic phyla, with morphotypes ranging from unicellular to multicellular filamentous forms, including those able to terminally (i.e., irreversibly) differentiate in form and function. It has been suggested that cyanobacteria raised oxygen levels in the atmosphere around 2.45-2.32 billion y ago during the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), hence dramatical...

Potential impact of gene regulatory mechanisms on the evolution of multicellularity in the volvocine algae

A fundamental question in biology is how multicellular organisms can arise from their single-celled precursors. The evolution of multicellularity requires the adoption of new traits in unicellular ancestors that allows the generation of form by, for example, increasing the size and developing new cell types. But what are the genetic, cellular and biochemical bases underlying the evolution of mu...

The origins of multicellular organisms.

Multicellularity has evolved in several eukaryotic lineages leading to plants, fungi, and animals. Theoretically, in each case, this involved (1) cell-to-cell adhesion with an alignment-of-fitness among cells, (2) cell-to-cell communication, cooperation, and specialization with an export-of-fitness to a multicellular organism, and (3) in some cases, a transition from "simple" to "complex" multi...
